3DN Art Gallery

3DN is proud to display the works of artists with an intellectual disability whose pieces are featured in some of our resources and publications. We are delighted to have partnerships with several arts and disability organisations. We feature works by artists with an intellectual disability from these organisations throughout our resources and publications.

The artworks portray the depth and variety of the experiences and talents of the artists. They add beauty, depth and personality to our resources, and they present another dimension of intellectual disability. Displaying these artworks promotes the visibility of individuals with an intellectual disability, and the organisations who provide support and opportunities. Some of the artists are part of professional pathway programs that help them achieve careers as professional artists.

Incorporating these artworks falls under our strategic objective 4.5 Develop a program of community awareness of intellectual and developmental disability health and wellbeing. By publishing these artworks we aim to promote the diversity of intellectual disability and of people with an intellectual disability.

Most pieces are available for purchase – contact the organisation listed in the artwork description for more information.

If you are an artist with an intellectual disability and you would like us to feature your art, please contact us.

Heather McCarthy

About the artist

Heather very much enjoys her painting sessions. Quietly and in her own way, Heather comes to the canvas, makes several paint strokes, and then moves off again before returning to create some more expressive gestures. Sometimes her painterly expression is peaceful, soft and delicate, and other times it is playfully cheeky and more assertive. For Heather, painting is way to materialise herself on the canvas.

Denise Allen

About the artist

Denise has a strong ability to focus, which is reflected in her work through her choice of colour and texture. Denise enjoys creating her abstract artworks independently, using a combination of acrylic paint and textas as her favourite mediums. As Denise is left handed, she always uses long brushstrokes in a left to right direction. Denise occasionally incorporates figurative symbols into her paintings, and has a particular interest in painting the Channel 7 logo.

Margaret Barton

About the artist

Margaret usually begins her paintings by outlining the frame of a house on paper, and then fills in and over with her wonderful blending of colours and shades of paint. Having experienced significant vision loss in recent years, Margaret now paints intuitively, using memories to inspire paintings of visual imagery from her past. She enjoys applying gradations of paint on the paper and the scratchy textural process of applying brushstrokes. Margaret has good literacy and numeracy skills, and one of her other favourite activities is bead-making, which involves counting and threading. Margaret picks the beads out the container and places them against her cheek to check their size and shape.

Rhonda Browne

About the artist

Rhonda’s style is very individual. She is very clear about what she wants to accomplish from the beginning, and undertakes her work with great focus. Rhonda’s main area of interest is working with collage. She is passionate about each stage of the process – first selecting all the pieces, cutting and assembling them to create a beautiful design, and then gluing them to the artwork. The final step in creating her artworks involves painting on top of the collage to create a unique multilayered effect.

Steve Wilson

About the artist

Steve enjoys the focussed process of painting – the slow, patient, repetitive actions that softly build up delicate layers of brushstrokes. Alana Antoun Untitled

Alana Antoun
Untitled
2014

About the artist

Alana is a quiet and considered mark-maker, taking time to carefully complete her work. She often chooses to paint with watercolour or draw with pens and markers, and over time develops brightly coloured images that are complex and layered works of art. Circular shapes and delicately dotted marks form meandering abstract arrangements of colour and line.

Alana’s bright and whimsical artworks reflect her cheerful, slightly cheeky yet sensitive manner. She has been part of the Visual Arts program since she began attending Studio ARTES in 2014. She has exhibited in the annual exhibition “Face and Place” at Wallarobba Arts And Cultural Centre in 2014, and again in 2015 at “Paint and Clay”, the annual Studio ARTES Exhibition in collaboration with Hornsby TAFE ceramics students.

Emily Crockford Sydney Opera House by Night

Emily Crockford
Sydney Opera House by Night
2014

About the artist

Emily Crockford’s artwork can be described as 'bold', 'assured' and 'sensual'. Whether sculpting fantastical royal characters or painting familiar still-life scenes, Emily’s artworks balance a series of seeming opposites. Blocks of strong colour sit alongside areas of intricate pattern. An energy of lyrical movement exists simultaneously with a sense of contemplation.

Emily loves to engage with other artists and share skills. She loves adventuring to new art studios. In 2013 Emily worked at UNSW Art & Design as a guest artist in Cicada Press, and in 2014 undertook a residency at Koskela. In 2015 she was an exhibiting artist in the Underbelly Arts Festival on Cockatoo Island, Sydney.

Emily explains “I like painting on fabrics and working with guest artists. I like my own techniques, playing and experimenting with different ideas. I want to be a great artist, and experiment.”

About the artist

Glen is passionate about his football team and his art. He has attended Studio ARTES for 10 years and has participated in many exhibitions over that time, including most recently “Botanicals” at Hornsby TAFE 2013; “Face and Place” at Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre 2014; and Paint and Clay at Hornsby TAFE in 2015.

Glen’s enthusiasm manifests itself in a very expressive style. Sometimes he uses his hands and arms to create his art, as well as brushes and other objects. The results are energetic and joyful paintings and occasionally prints and drawings. Always willing to try something new, Glen recently produced some beautiful botanical works using scratch foam printing techniques, one of which was reproduced in the Studio ARTES 2016 Calendar.

Yvonne Stocker Untitled

Yvonne Stocker
Untitled
2012

About the artist

In many of her works, Yvonne brings to light a radiating aura or energetic field which surrounds the central figures she portrays. She often captures characters seemingly caught in a daydream, their distant gaze indicating their focus is elsewhere. Boundaries are blurred in Yvonne’s images as her figures fuse with the light and colour which emanates from both within and around them.

Yvonne creates her work in the visual arts program at Studio A’s parent organisation Studio ARTES. She typically begins her work at Studio ARTES, and then she works tirelessly to complete her images wherever she is able – whether at home or in the art studio. In 2013 her work was exhibited at NG Gallery in Chippendale.
