Using big data to develop an interactive web-based platform to inform local services about the health needs of people with an intellectual disability

Past project

The Department of Developmental Disability Neuropsychiatry, UNSW Sydney obtained funding which allowed us to create a web-based user interface to assist Local Health Districts and Networks to understand and respond to the mental health and health needs of people with an intellectual disability in their area.

This interactive web-based tool uses the results of the linkage of multiple service systems data (‘big data’) to develop a regional profile of the demographics, health, acute care health service use and associated costs of people with an intellectual disability. Whilst the linkage is retrospective, it identifies, at a population level, people with intellectual disability across New South Wales, and allows the development of a clear picture of the health and service needs of this group.

The intellectual disability health data portal can be accessed here: idhealthdataportal.unsw.edu.au
