This new publication describes how a recent core competency framework, The Intellectual Disability Mental Health Core Competency Framework: A Manual for Mental Health Professionals was developed and disseminated to mental health professionals, primarily across New South Wales. The paper outlines in detail the steps taken to develop the core competency framework, including an online survey of NSW Health mental health staff, a Delphi survey to develop consensus on the core competencies to include, and consultation with people with an intellectual disability and carers and support networks. In an effort to ensure that the Framework reached as many professionals as possible, a multi-pronged dissemination program was devised, including a forum to launch the Framework, the development of a companion practical toolkit, and promotion across stakeholder networks. The Framework is available online, and we are currently evaluating its uptake and use. This paper may be of use to anyone who is planning a core competency framework either in the area of intellectual disability mental health, or more broadly in other health areas.
