New e-Learning module on death and dying is now available for disability professionals

“Supporting People with Intellectual Disability to Understand and Cope with Death and Dying”

The module aims to further disability professionals’ understanding of how to support a person with intellectual disability to learn about death and to cope with grief and change after experiencing a loss.

It covers topics such as:

  • How to support a person with intellectual disability to learn about death
  • The importance of talking about death with people with intellectual disability
  • How and when to discuss death with people with intellectual disability
  • Understanding grief in people with intellectual disability
  • The difference between grief and depression
  • How to support a person with intellectual disability to cope with grief
  • How to support a person with intellectual disability to cope with change after a loss
  • When to seek professional help for the person with intellectual disability

The e-learning site www.idhealtheducation.edu.au was launched in 2013 to educate people about intellectual disabilities and mental health. The modules have been developed by The Department of Developmental Disability Neuropsychiatry (3DN) and funded by Ageing Disability and Home Care, Family and Community Services.
