The Guide is a national framework of understanding and action for frontline mental health service providers with respect to people with an intellectual disability. It provides an overview of intellectual disability mental health, why accessible services are important, the principles that should guide service delivery, practical strategies for inclusive and accessible services, and the implications for the service system.

3DN at the University of New South Wales wants to improve the quality of mental health care provided to people with an intellectual disability. In December 2013, UNSW’s Chair in Intellectual Disability Mental Health presented at “Our Time to Shine”, a Special Olympics Australia Health Symposium, held in conjunction with the opening of the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games. 3DN recently made a submission to the National Mental Health Commission’s Review of Mental Health Programs and Services. More information on the review can be found on the Commission’s website. We completed responses to the Commission’s survey and summarised our feedback in the attached report.

Associate Professor Trollor presented a talk at a forum held at NSW Parliament house yesterday. The talk outlined potential strategies to address the health issues related to ageing in people with an ID. The talk was part of a series of presentations in a Forum entitled “Dementia and Disability: The Facts, Strategies and Implications” was organised by Alzheimer’s Australia NSW, the Centre for Disability Studies at the University of Sydney, and the University of New England.

This report details the progress that the Chair IDMH and the Department of Developmental Disability Neuropsychiatry has made since inception to present, 2009 – 2014. It comes as the first five year funding period for the Chair from the Clinical Innovation and Governance, Ageing Disability & Home Care (ADHC) is drawing to a close and allows reflection on our success and achievements to date.

Salary: A$81K - A$87K per year (plus 9.25% employer superannuation and leave loading) This is a new position offered by the Department of Developmental Disability Neuropsychiatry (3DN) within the School of Psychiatry, UNSW Medicine. 3DN supports the mental health needs of people with an Intellectual or Developmental Disability through the conduct of research, education and training of health professionals and the development of services and policy.
