The IASSIDD Health SIRG will be holding a conference in Belfast, N Ireland on the 19th-20th June 2017 at the Hilton Hotel. The theme of the event is “Bridging the gap: from evidence to improved health for persons with IDD”. An international planning group has been working to organize the conference which will feature keynote addresses by Bev Temple (CANADA) and Roy McConkey (N. IRELAND). The conference focusses on the following 6 themes:

Professor Julian Trollor, UNSW Chair of Intellectual Disability Mental Health, was the keynote speaker at the NSW CID Parliamentary Forum. It was held in the NSW Parliament House in Sydney on March 31, 2017. Professor Trollor presented findings of a recently released study on high levels of preventable deaths for people with intellectual disability.

A recent study using data from the Bettering the Evaluation and Care of Health program found significant differences in the consultations, problems identified, and their management for people with an intellectual disability compared to the general population. This study found an under management of health conditions common for people with an intellectual disability, also that administrative rather than medically related actions dominated their clinical treatments.

A total of 732 Australian adults with an intellectual disability died in NSW over six years, many from causes or conditions that could have been avoided with more appropriate health care and monitoring. That is the conclusion of the largest study ever conducted in Australia of the cause of death for adults with an intellectual disability (ID). The study, conducted by researchers at UNSW, found potentially avoidable deaths at over twice the rate of the general population.
